Patio decking in natural wood look

For many, there is nothing better than spending free time on the terrace. So your terrace should always look great. Wooden terraces are still the most popular choice, as they exude a Mediterranean feel. However, wood is very fragile and requires a lot of maintenance. The situation is different with wood-effect decking made from the innovative wood-plastic mixture WPC. This material has a natural wood look, is completely robust and at the same time easy to maintain.

Wood-effect decking made from weather-resistant WPC

Wood plastic composite usually contains between 50 and 75 percent wood. Plastic and wood waste is shredded and combined with a binding agent under high pressure. The environmentally friendly nature of WPC is also reflected in its recyclability: should WPC decking boards ever become obsolete, they can be completely recycled.

Advantages of wood-effect WPC decking

WPC decking boards look just like real wood but have the practical properties of plastic. These include resistance to weathering. WPC decking boards do not crack when exposed to direct sunlight and moisture does not damage this material either. WPC decking boards do not need a protective coating because WPC is almost indestructible. Another advantage that should not go unmentioned is that splinters don’t happen with WPC. This means that wood-effect WPC decking is barefoot-friendly.

A wood-look terrace is quickly realised

For all do-it-yourselfers, it is a great advantage that WPC decking boards are just as easy to work with as wood. The WPC decking boards can easily be cut to the right length with a cross-cut or circular saw. They are fastened to the substructure with stainless steel screws to prevent corrosion. Because the wood-effect WPC decking boards are so easy to work with, you can also build terraces in different shapes. So there are no limits to your imagination with decking boards made of practical WPC.

Wood-look decking is easy to maintain

WPC decking boards do not require any protective coating. Cleaning is also super simple: it is usually sufficient to sweep the wood-effect decking thoroughly with a soft brush in the spring. This quickly removes the dirt accumulated during the winter months. In case of heavy soiling, WPC decking boards can be cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner in a flash.

The 4 most frequently asked questions about Decking boards

It depends on what is important to you. Wooden decking is 100% natural, looks warm and inviting and is ideal for nature lovers. Weathering, cracks or splinters can be an issue, as can warping. Wooden decks can also become very slippery when wet, especially when a green coating has formed. Therefore, your wooden deck requires regular maintenance to limit any natural weathering. WPC decks make for more modern patios. Even though the plank structure is similar to that of wooden decking, WPC planks are characterised by a high degree of uniformity. Neither splinters nor cracks are to be expected. If you want solid, good-looking decking boards that require little maintenance, there’s nothing like WPC decking. In addition to the general installation instructions of the manufacturers, there are a few more things to consider. Crucially, you should pay attention to the subfloor. This is because it supports the whole deck construction and must be more stable and weather-resistant than the planks themselves. While the boards can be easily replaced from above, repairing a substructure is a much bigger job. Today, decking boards are usually installed with clips, which makes the process relatively easy and also makes screws invisible. Here are the most important tips for laying decking boards.

This varies greatly. Decking boards are sold by the metre (running metre). The different prices for wooden decking boards are down to availability, transport routes and durability. For WPC decking boards, it depends on the manufacturer, material composition, raw material quality, dimensions and quality control. Currently we’re seeing the following market prices per running metre:

  • WPC hollow planks 3–8 €
  • WPC solid planks 5–15 €
  • Sheathed WPC planks 7–20 €
  • Titanwood WPC planks 7–15 €

Decking can be laid on almost any surface. This is because it is almost always possible to find a suitable solution for building the right substructure. Solid subfloors such as concrete, tiles or slabs are ideal and require minimal preparatory work. Gravel surfaces are also load-bearing and therefore possible. If you want to lay decking boards on soil, you must create load-bearing supports for the substructure. Click here for more information on planning terraces.
