Advantages of WPC hollowcore for the terrace

Terraces are important for cheerful celebrations and cosy relaxation. They were once almost exclusively made from washed concrete slabs or paving stones but wooden terraces are clearly the better choice in terms of appearance. For a long time, many patio owners relied on the hardwood bankirai but that comes at an extremely high price. WPC hollowcore planks for terraces are gaining popularity for both price and sustainability reasons.

WPC hollow core planks – material properties

To produce WPC, wood cuttings and plastic waste are processed into small chips. These components are mixed and pressed into moulds with a kind of glue under high pressure. This means the WPC hollow boards for the terrace have a proportion of about 70 percent wood and 30 percent plastic. They can hardly be distinguished visually from real wood and are resistant to moisture, UV rays and other harmful factors thanks to the plastic constituent. This means that WPC decking does not need a protective coating and still looks beautiful even after decades of use. Another special feature is that WPC decking boards do not splinter. That is why a terrace made of WPC is considered very barefoot-friendly.

Laying WPC hollowcore planks on your terrace

Laying modern WPC decking boards is easy. The advantage is that the old exposed aggregate concrete boards can simply be left in place. This not only saves work but also disposal. Before installing a substructure, it is advisable to spread a weed fleece. After the substructure has been completed, the WPC hollow-chamber boards are fastened to it with screws. Stainless steel screws are best suited for screwing as they do not corrode.

Since the planks for the terrace can be processed just as easily as real wood, different shapes can of course also be created. There are no limits to the shape of your terrace. To shorten the WPC decking boards, a conventional cross-cut saw or handheld circular saw is all you need.

Please do note, as the name suggests, these decking boards are hollow on the inside. As a result, they have a relatively low weight. After installation, it is advisable to seal the end faces of the boards with suitable end caps. In this way, you prevent moisture or pests from penetrating the hollow chamber of the WPC planks.
